The Gritstone Club is 100 years old on 15th January 2022. During the early decades members tended to climb close to home, because a lack of disposable income, reliance on public transport and travel being limited due to petrol rationing. The same is true now, but this time due to Covid-19. So in our Centenary year we took on a challenge to both: a) climb on 100 different crags, and b) ascend 100 different mountains.
So far we have collectively climbed on 108 different crags that span the length and breadth of the UK (not forgetting Greece, from Scottish islands to Cornwall, to Kalymnos and to Sussex Sandstone. We have also ascended 195 mountains in England, Scotland, Wales and mainland Europe. The most popular mountain has been Whernside, above our Ribblehead hut in the Yorkshire Dales.
