JB@80: a weekend of walking and feasting

JB@80: a weekend of walking and feasting (18th – 20th January, at the Smithy)

Present: David Bateman, John Belbin, Andy Dyson, Peter Haigh, Brian and Susan Melia, Alan and Lynn Moss, John Ward.

The weekend was a great success. An atrocious weather forecast in the media failed to dissuade nine Grits from turning up at the Smithy to celebrate with good cheer worthy of a second Xmas party John Belbin’s 80th birthday.

John himself with John W and David arrived Friday and took to the fells from Stonethwaite for a round via Dock Tarn and Watendlath (well almost). There was an unsuspected amount of ice and keen wind to contend with – and that was just in Stonethwaite! Meanwhile an iron man by the name of Brian reached the Smithy by running up from Dunmail Raise and taking in Helvellyn top; just to test out his microspike grips, no doubt. Susan and Andy had chosen to approach the Smithy by way of High Seat, where Poppy like a dog of the Hellarwe tribe could only proceed by leaping more than her own height.

Brian had to return home, but after all this healthy activity the rest of us enjoyed a jolly evening during which JB’s first birthday cake was consumed.

Next morning we all set off from Grasmere up Far Easedale, from where JB, Lynn and Alan peeled off down Wythburn, while the rest straggled up onto Ullscarf and thence down past Harrop Tarn.

That evening was even more jolly, beginning with a splendid meal provided by the new octogenarian, after which a second birthday cake was demolished.

On Sunday Susan and Andy were back on the hills. Parking at Peter House Farm they walked up to Great Cock Up, then across to Meal Fell, Great Sca Fell, Knott, then back to Great and Little Sca Fell and onto Longlands leaving a couple of road miles back to the car (4 hours 40 mins).

Thankfully, we all just managed to get home before the great snowfall beginning that Sunday evening.
