It is possible to contact 999 by SMS text (UK only) and it could prove a life saver when in the hills and there is no voice signal on a mobile phone. Go to www.emergencysms.org.uk for details of how to register and how to use the facility.

Alternatively a mobile phone can be registered for the 112 number and used in the same way in the following countries: –

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France ( inc, Guyane, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Réunion), Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal ( inc. Azores and Madeira), Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain (inc. Canary Islands), Sweden and the United Kingdom.

The text message sent to 999 or 112 has to very briefly say who, why and where the emergency service is required. To enable your phone simply send the text message ‘register’ to 112 or 999 and follow the instructions given in the reply message.
