  • Duddon Valley – High Moss.  9 – 11 June - The Duddon really is a very pleasant and unspoilt valley with plenty of low level paths and access from High Moss to the hills and crags
  • Midsummer Meet 23 – 25 June at The Smithy - On Saturday, Andy and David drove over to the fastest drying crag that came to mind, namely Raven Langdale. The rest of the party had beautiful walk over Rannerdale Knotts beside Crummock Water.
  • Fairy Cave & Northern Dales Meet - Haggs Bank Bunkhouse and campsite at Nenthead was the venue and provided excellent modern facilities.  Saturday saw the 4 cavers enjoy a 6 hour trip up the very long and wet but beautiful Fairy Hole Cave in Weardale

  • Paul Ramsden and Mick Fowler make first ascent of Gave Ding, Nepal - Just got back from an excellent trip to far West Nepal with Mick Fowler. Managed to make the first overall ascent of Gave Ding (6571m) via its very impressive north buttress.
  • Wind Turbines at Almscliff – response before 11th June - Your assistance needed. 2 x 48m high wind turbines are proposed very close to Almscliff Crag – something we cannot allow. Please place your objections ASAP following the instructions below. Every response counts. Cheers Mick

  • Paul Ramsden to attempt North face Kishtwar - Paul Ramsden will set off with Mick Fowler in mid-September to attempt first ascent of north face of Hagshu (6,515m) in East Kishtwar region of Indian Himalaya.

  • Smithy – Vets and Beginners Rock 4th/5th May - The original objective of this meet was to enable members - who had not climbed for some time and others who had never climbed but might wish to try - to get onto the rock. In the event it turned into a ‘Past Presidents’ meet!

  • Day Walks - Day walks have come thick and fast in the dark days of winter, with more frequent walks in Derbyshire being added to the list:
  • Muirshearlich, Scotland - We were blessed with perfect winter conditions – hard-packed snow on the tops, and for the most part bright sun blazing out of a blue sky, with not much wind
  • Meets Calendar – Weds Eve walking map links sorted - The problems with the web links for the maps on the most recent Wednesday evening walks have been corrected. Just click the NGR and a new window will open with the pub highlighted.
  • JB@80: a weekend of walking and feasting at the Smithy - The weekend was a great success.
  • New Year Meet - This meet was one of the wettest and dullest of any of the Smithy New Year Meets.
  • Fairhead climbing – joint meet with the Pinnacle Club - Fairhead is one of the UK's more impressive TRAD climbing venues - by the sea but more akin to a large mountain crag - interesting approaches and big quality routes. This is a week long trip from the 25th May.
  • Multiple club membership refund - If you a member, of more than one BMC affiliated club, you can reclaim additional payments.
  • BMC – Clubs Civil Liability Insurance - The BMC summary of Clubs Civil Liability Insurance is available for 2013.

  • Provence 2012 - Hot Rock Meet, Provence, 29 March - 6 April: Based in a villa near Brignoles the climbers in our party of 11 visited a clutch of excellent limestone crags and a granite gorge The walkers traversed several ridges and spent one day on the island of Port Cros.
  • BMC Alpine lectures - Line up of Nick Bullock and Tim Neill in April and may: - covering best areas to visit; glacier travel; weather; huts & bivis; avalanche awareness; route selection; and the dark art of moving together.
  • Jack Bloor Races – May 8th - This year's Jack Bloor races, Ilkley Moor on Tuesday May 8th.
  • Lake Tahoe – California – Nigel Calaghan - It is the middle grade traditional climbers dream crag. Fantastic rock with the reknowned Dykes, horizontal ribs of rock - ‘Dyke Hiking’ is the essential art.
  • Rock-climbing from The Smithy (up to E1)-Andy Causer - The Smithy (the Lakes hut) uniquely well-placed for quick access to Lakes climbing. This article provide a summary of the low to mid-grade climbing
  • Mammoth Lakes – California – by Nigel Calaghan - Mammoth is a good base to explore the crags on the eastern side of the High Sierra. Superb granite crags include Dike Wall, Crystal crags and slightly further south is the sub alpine Patricia Bowl.
  • Tuolumne Meadows – California – by Nigel Calaghan - The climbing is on fantastic granite ranging from slabs to cracks and walls. The rock is quite smooth but with good friction and provided with knobs that stick out of the rock and provide useful holds. On the domes there is a lot of smooth featureless slabs and the routes follow natural features such as grooves and cracks.
