Smithy Easter Meet 2018 (30 March – 2 April)

There was a low turn out for the meet, which we can blame on the appalling forecast for the weekend. Attendees – Andrew Dyson, Peter Haigh, Lynn and Alan Moss (+ Richard Moss and Hannah on Saturday and Sunday)

Andrew drove up on Thursday night to take advantage of the weather! He and Lynn walked up Iron Crag on Friday while I drove up on Friday afternoon, intend on cycling around Thirlmere – the road was however closed due to fallen trees. I had to settle for a pint at the Kings Head and enjoy a beautifully sunny evening.

The Saturday forecast was grim… we waited for it to improve…. Consulting the Met Office it was decided that we shouldn’t venture too high and should head NW to Whinlatter. Starting just outside Thornthwaite, we headed steeply up through the forest to Bart for fine views of the low cloud and mist, but it wasn’t raining.

From there we went on to Lords Seat, in the cloud and it started snowing. Taking shelter in the forest we found our way to Seat How, to the “jewel of Whinlatter”. We should have been rewarded with fine views of Skiddaw and Blencathra, but it was worth it.

Alan spent the day at Leyton Moss, birdwatching.

On Saturday evening, Richard and Hannah arrive to swell the numbers. They were heading for Scotland for a few weeks, complete with kayaks.

The forecast on Sunday was much improved. No rain and higher cloud. Avoiding the honeypots, Andrew and I headed NW again and climbed Gavel Fell, Blake Fell,

Carling Knot, Burnbank Fell and Owsen Fell, all to the SE of Loweswater.
